Dark car was seen at scene of beating

JOURNAL NEWS BRIEF

December 12, 1995

Detectives investigating the attack on a woman at the Silk Plant Forest store Saturday night said yesterday that they think the person responsible for the crime left the area in a dark vehicle.

Capt. Rodney Rumple of the Winston-Salem Police Department said that a dark-colored, possibly burgundy, Ford Mustang was seen leaving the front of the store at Silas Creek Crossing shortly before Jill Marker was found on the floor in the store.

Marker, who authorities said was beaten in the head with a blunt object, remained in critical condition yesterday at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Rumple said that maker is five months' pregnant and that the fetus apparently is fine.

Rumple said that someone saw a black man leaving the store, getting in the passenger side of a Mustang and leaving the parking lot in a hurry.

Marker was found about 9 p.m. Saturday by two customers who heard a woman moaning. Police say they think that whoever beat Marker also robbed the store.

Rumple said that Marker's employer, Silk Plant Forest, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.
